Galore Creek was honoured to facilitate an archeological training program alongside the Tahltan Central Government’s (TCG) Culture and Heritage Department and Kleanza Consulting Ltd. The training, Resources Information Standards Committee – Archaeological and CMT Inventory Training for Crew Members, is managed by the British Columbia Association of Professional Archaeologists and provides education on site identification, surveying, and recording skills. Four Tahltan students attended the training between June 24th-28th 2024, which took place near the Galore Creek Project’s Ch’iyōne Camp.
The training consisted of classroom and in-field portions, and the students conducted archeological surveys near sites of proposed activity for the Galore Creek Project. At the end of the training program all four students passed the final exam to become certified to act as Archeological Assistants through the British Columbia Association of Professional Archaeologists and BC Provincial Government.
Galore Creek is currently undertaking archeological studies of the Project area in close collaboration with the Tahltan Nation. Archeological Impact Assessments (AIAs) are conducted prior to all site disturbance activities, and we have had a Chance Find Procedure in place since 2005 to support protection of Culture and Heritage Resources. In 2019, Galore Creek supported the completion of a Tahltan Land Use Study and previously worked with Kleanza Consulting to provide the same Archeological training to Tahltan individuals in 2022.
Thank you to TCG’s Culture and Heritage Department, Kleanza Consulting, and the Tahltan students for participating in this training program. Supporting local communities is a core value at Galore Creek, and we are proud to be involved in initiatives that promote Tahltan Culture and Heritage.
