2023 AME David Barr Award Recipient

Galore Creek is proud to announce that we are the recipient of the 2023 Association for Mineral Exploration David Barr Award for Excellence in Leadership and Innovation in Mineral Exploration Health & Safety.

The award recognizes Galore Creek’s innovative approach to aviation safety to meet the challenges of developing a large, high-grade copper-gold deposit in Tahltan Territory in northwest B.C.

At Galore Creek, we commit to the health and safety of our people, including employees, contractors, and communities through promoting a strong culture of safety and wellbeing. We train and build awareness and remain focused on ensuring that everyone goes home safe and healthy.

Due to the nature of the Galore Creek Project site, with the deposit and main camp in a location accessible only by air, extensive helicopter support is required. Over the course of five years, since implementation in 2019, our aviation program has grown as Project activities evolve. We have installed six remote camera stations each comprised of two cameras and a weather station throughout the Galore Creek Mineral Tenure to provide timely weather data to support safe and established flight paths, have implemented helicopter training sessions for all Project staff, and have flown over 11,000 hours with no reportable accidents or incidents. At Galore Creek we strive for continuous improvement and excellence and our operations currently meet or exceed the BARS standards.

In 2023, the Project was the largest helicopter-supported exploration project in British Columbia with an average of six helicopters and one fixed-wing aircraft operating every day through the core four-month period of our annual field program. This aviation support was integral in facilitating our 2023 field season which included 21,000 metres of diamond and geotechnical drilling, essential access road safety improvements, environmental baseline studies, geophysical surveys and test pitting, and maintenance of site infrastructure.

A huge congratulations to the Galore Creek Project team on receiving this award, which recognizes our deep appreciation of the need to ensure safe operation at the Galore Creek Project site. David Barr was Exploration Manager at Galore Creek in the 1960’s, and we are honored to continue to represent Galore Creek as leaders in Health & Safety.

Well done to all of the other AME Award recipients this year. You can find out more about the awards at the following link from AME: https://amebc.ca/about/awards/
