Tahltan Culture and Literacy Camps
Galore Creek Mining Corporation supports Tahltan communities with ongoing culture and literacy camps that provide the opportunity for children to improve their reading and language skills and enhance their knowledge and awareness of Tahltan language and culture.
The camps are run during the summer months in the nearby communities of Telegraph Creek and Iskut. They provide children with a fun way to continue learning and improving essential reading skills, and to learn more about their culture and language from elders.
The camps are the result of a collaboration between Galore Creek Mining Corporation, the Tahltan Band and Iskut Valley Health Services. Funding contributions come from Galore Creek Mining Corporation and several other local mining companies.
In the camps, morning reading is generally followed by field trip activities in the afternoon, such as hiking, working at the net, practicing the Tahltan language, or berry picking at the Tahltan blueberry camp. The Telegraph Creek camp is held during the fishing season in July, so the children can learn how to pull fish from nets, and how to dry or can the salmon for the winter.
Galore Creek Mining Corporation is proud to support this inter-generational community learning initiative that integrates literacy and culture.
